Medical Schemes’ Response to Covid 19

Medical Schemes’ Response to Covid 19

With the economic impact of the global Covid 19 pandemic affecting many households, we look at what medical schemes are doing to help their members.

Momentum Medical Scheme & Momentum Health Solutions have investigated various solutions to financially assist their members with paying their contributions during these unprecedented times. Momentum has requested and been granted special dispensation from the Council for Medical Services to temporarily allow members to pay their contributions from positive balances in their medical scheme savings account, which is normally prohibited.

Two major medical schemes are allowing contributions to be funded from positive medical savings account balances

Discovery have implemented similar provisions for members, as well as certain contribution concessions to qualifying small and medium sized businesses.

For members who are on health plans with a medical savings account (MSA), Discovery Health Medical Scheme will allow members with a sufficient MSA balance to use their positive balances to pay for their total medical scheme contributions for up to three months.

Discovery is offering contribution concessions to qualifying businesses

Small and medium size businesses that qualify may access a concession that allows them to defer medical scheme contributions for their employees for a period of up to two months. These contributions will be interest free and will become payable over a period of up to 12 months after the concession period. More than ever, given the current health crisis, it is the responsibility of medical schemes to remain viable, provide access to care for members and cover the associated costs.

While other medical schemes may not be in a position to come out with such widespread concessions, they are nevertheless trying to find new and innovative ways to care for their members and to alleviate financial pressures during these uncertain times. For example, Bonitas and Medshield are considering contribution queries from members directly affected by the spread of the Coronavirus on a case-by-case basis and will endeavour to offer as much assistance as possible. Although not directly related to medical contributions, Medshield has attempted to put a little more money in their members’ pockets by unlocking shopping and legal benefits via their Loyalty Programme partners.

It is important to keep medical cover in place

We emphasise the importance of retaining your medical scheme cover and if necessary, prioritising contribution payments over other expenses, as it is essential to have access to quality healthcare especially during a pandemic of this nature.
